10 Stories Stay Zai — Uonuma

Plan your stay

FUN TO STAY

Bring your work,
make time for snowboarding and hot springs.
Stay, soak
and reset.

Art in the rice fields, skis in the snow, and a hot spring to come home to. Yuzawa Uonuma makes a rewarding base for the Echigo-Tsumari Art Triennale and winter adventures.
It also shares a building with the headquarters and editorial team of Jiyujin, the company behind our stays, which began as a magazine publisher. Yes, this is someone’s office. It may spoil your idea of a normal workplace.

rooms for your stay

Nine rooms across the first and second floors. All have two single beds plus space for two extra beds, accommodating up to four guests. Every room has a toilet, washbasin and semi-open-air bath with freely flowing source water. Guests may also use the main baths, lounge and shared kitchen during their stay. Toothbrushes and other toiletries are generally not provided; please bring your usual items.

eat & drink!

There is plenty here to tempt you out of the hot spring. Our favourites include Ryu Zushi, Miyanoya, Keyakien and Yuge. Further afield in Koide, Yamani is worth the trip if you enjoy grilled offal. For something casual in Echigo-Yuzawa, try hegi-soba — buckwheat noodles made with a seaweed binder — at Shinbashi, or crisp pork cutlets at Ninjintei. Kodamaya in Urasa calls itself a family restaurant. Its cooking is rather more ambitious than that sounds.
For an evening out by train, head to Muikamachi: Kinari for Japanese pub food, Hijiri for grilled chicken skewers, Uonuma Kamakura for a little of everything, kankan for pizza, relaxed Baro, or Naniwa Chaya for a course meal booked ahead. Finish with a drink at EVER LASTING. Check the last train before ordering another: evening services finish early.
Closer to the stay, local favourites include Dosanko, Tabataya and ramen shop Gotaru. These are separate outings, not shops on the walk from the station; plan your route, especially in winter.
For a breakfast worth getting up for, Farm Front Seki Noen is about five minutes away by car and opens from 9:30. We do not serve breakfast, but offer bread and coffee as a courtesy, and sell Jiyujin’s curries, prepared dishes and rice. The restaurant links will help with opening days and reservations; some are in Japanese. A little planning leaves more time for eating.

have a nice onsen

Iron gives the sodium-calcium chloride hot-spring water its cloudy brown colour. More than 200 litres per minute flow through the baths. The main bath area has a Bona sauna and a steam sauna; an outdoor wood-fired sauna operates on holidays only. Even the cold bath uses spring water cooled by a chiller.
This is also the headquarters and editorial office of Jiyujin, which began as a magazine publisher. Our staff share the baths, saunas, entrance, kitchen and lounge with guests. An office with a hot spring sounded like a good idea to us. It still does.

behind the story

This building began life as a day-use hot spring, with banquet halls and rooms for a long, lazy rest after a bath. Those spaces have been reworked into guest rooms by Yuko Kosaka, a designer based in nearby Nagaoka. Same affection for a good soak; a rather different place to spend the night.
The main baths were designed by Kentaro Imai, whose work includes many Japanese public bathhouses. Beyond them, Mount Makihata, Mount Hakkai and the rice fields change with the seasons. The landscape does quite a bit of the decorating for us.

Important — Please read before your stay

A narrow winter road between high banks of snow.

You cannot enter the property before 16:00, even if your flight or travel schedule brings you here earlier. Luggage storage is not available. Please plan to arrive and complete check-in between 16:00 and 21:00. Check-in after 21:00 is generally not permitted.

Joetsu-Kokusai-Ski-jo-mae Station has no station building, shops or cafés. There are no shops or cafés on the walk to the property either. Arriving early can leave you outside in rain or snow. If you need to wait, do so around Echigo-Yuzawa Station, where there is a waiting room and a choice of shops and restaurants, or in Tokyo or Niigata before boarding your Shinkansen.

The walk from the local station takes about 10 minutes in normal conditions. In winter, snow and water sprayed onto the roads to melt it can make the route very slushy. Walking and pulling a suitcase can take much longer than expected. There is no taxi rank at Joetsu-Kokusai-Ski-jo-mae Station. If you need a taxi, take one from Echigo-Yuzawa Station.

Taxis are limited in winter and can be particularly difficult to arrange during snowfall. Plan your transport in advance and allow plenty of time between checking out and your Shinkansen departure. Do not rely on getting a taxi immediately.

Self-check-in includes a live video call with the check-in centre and a passport identity check. The lead guest’s reservation name must match the actual guest and their passport. Only the registered lead guest and the companions included in the booking may stay. Reservations cannot be transferred. A substitute guest cannot check in or enter in your place, including late at night.

The check-in centre can become busy when several guests arrive at once. Allow enough time to complete check-in by 21:00; check-in after 21:00 is generally not permitted. Late-night and early-morning arrivals after the Nagaoka Fireworks Festival or Fuji Rock Festival have caused repeated difficulties. If you are attending an event, plan to complete check-in during the 16:00–21:00 check-in period before going to the event. Do not plan your first arrival for after the event if it will be later than 21:00.
