10 Stories Stay Oze

FUN TO STAY

Oku-Oze, Ginzan-daira.
Sharpen your senses
and return to yourself.

Surrounded by 2,000-metre peaks, Ginzan-daira has a way of putting everyday worries in perspective. Clear water rises from the ground, trees fill the valleys, and sometimes thunder makes a spectacular entrance. After the rain, mist drifts through the mountains. You could watch this show all day. There is no admission charge.
Of course, nature does not stop at the window. Stink bugs, horseflies, blackflies, flying ants and dragonflies can be plentiful in some seasons; stink bugs are particularly talented at finding a way indoors. We cannot keep every insect out. Please bear this in mind if you are uncomfortable around them.
Bears also live in these mountains. Keep your distance from wildlife, never approach or feed bears, and follow local guidance. Do not leave food or rubbish outside. Enjoy the wild surroundings while giving their residents plenty of space.

rooms for your stay

Six guest rooms on the second floor, all with air conditioning, a toilet with bidet function and a washbasin. Three are twin rooms with two beds; three are exclusively for solo travellers.
Downstairs are small, separate men’s and women’s hot-spring baths, a shared kitchen and a lounge with raised tatami seating. The lounge suits reading and work, and serves as a dining space in the mornings and evenings. In chilly late autumn, the wood-burning stove is lit so you can relax in its warmth.

eat & drink!

The mountains are wonderfully quiet. They are also rather short of convenience stores. Buy your ingredients, drinks, snacks and seasonings before driving up: supermarkets and restaurants in town are about 40 minutes away by car. Even the small souvenir shop at Lake Okutadami is about 20 minutes away.
We do not serve breakfast or dinner. The shared kitchen has cooking utensils and dishes, but no seasonings, so bring what you need. Think simple suppers, good local rice and nobody rushing you off the table.
If cooking every meal sounds a little too virtuous, we offer bread and coffee in the morning. We also sell prepared foods from Jiyujin no Kurashi, our food business, including Satoyama Jujo Original Curry, and locally grown Uonuma Koshihikari rice.

have a nice onsen

The baths are small, with freely flowing source water. As the source is relatively cool at 40°C, we heat it slightly except in midsummer. Enjoy a long, gentle soak.
Shirogane no Yu, directly opposite, has separate men’s and women’s large baths and outdoor baths. One of its two outdoor baths uses freely flowing source water. We provide one admission ticket for each day of your stay; second and subsequent visits on the same day incur a charge.

behind the story

Murasugi was a mountain lodge loved by Takeshi Kaiko, one of Japan’s most cherished literary adventurers. A winner of Japan’s Akutagawa literary prize, he travelled the world fishing and wrote vividly about the places and people he encountered. 10 Stories Stay Oze is a renovation of the later lodge that replaced the original mountain hut, with particular attention to plumbing and comfort. Furniture is carefully chosen where it matters: Sealy beds in every room and genuine Fritz Hansen Grand Prix and Ant chairs by Arne Jacobsen in the lounge. The lounge also holds books by Kaiko and precious objects left at Murasugi.
Mobile reception is poor inside the building. Please use internet calling over Wi-Fi.
