Explore · Ginzan-daira, Okutadami & Oze

A little further
from the everyday.

A river, a mountain lake and a remarkable amount of sky. Ginzan-daira rewards travellers who bring a car, walking shoes and a little room in the schedule. You may discover a talent for watching clouds.

Your base: Ginzan-daira, on the Uonuma side of Oze

Our stay is in Ginzan-daira, beside Lake Okutadami—not at the Oze marshland trailhead. A stroll nearby, a lake cruise and a day walking in Oze are three different outings. Choose the pace that suits you.

Nearby nature · Leave the car parked

Ginzan-daira, one slow step at a time

Follow the local walking paths, look towards the peaks from Ishidaki Bridge, and let the beech woods do the entertaining. Fresh leaves, lingering mountain snow and autumn colour each make a different visit. Bring binoculars if you like birds; a book is equally acceptable.

From our base
Start in the Ginzan-daira neighbourhood around the stay. Ask locally which paths are open and suitable that day; riverside walks are different from the surrounding mountain climbs.
When to go
Green season; snow can linger in spring and paths may close with conditions.

Scenery · Let someone else steer

Lake Okutadami by boat

Forested slopes tumble towards a long, winding mountain lake. A sightseeing cruise is a lovely way to see its scale without climbing anything. Autumn brings colour to the shoreline; greener months have their own quieter appeal.

From our base
Check the operator’s current Ginzan-daira and Okutadami cruise routes, departure point and timetable. The sightseeing cruise is separate from the reserved transport route into Oze.
When to go
Seasonal, generally late spring to autumn; sailings depend on conditions.

Shiori Pass & the waterfall clouds

On the right morning, cloud spills over the ridgeline like a slow-motion waterfall. The mountains are worth looking at even when the clouds decline to perform. Treat it as a scenic outing, with a spectacular bonus if the weather agrees.

From our base
A mountain-road drive from Ginzan-daira. Check Route 352 and current access arrangements before setting out; designated autumn shuttle services may operate on selected dates.
When to go
Road access is seasonal, typically summer to early November. Winter closure and weather can change plans.

Ozenuma: make a day of it

A high mountain lake, wetland boardwalks and a view towards Mt Hiuchigatake: Ozenuma is a wonderful reason to pack walking shoes. It is an excursion from Ginzan-daira, not a short stroll from your room. Leave enough time to enjoy it and get back.

From our base
Reserve the seasonal Uonuma–Oze boat-and-bus route in advance, then walk from Numayama Pass. Confirm the outward and return connections before booking. The alternative road via Miike involves a long mountain drive and a shuttle; private cars cannot continue to Numayama Pass.
When to go
Seasonal transport and trails, mainly early summer to autumn; dates and snow conditions vary.

Angling · For people who bring a rod

A fishing day on the lake

The lake and its mountain setting have a long pull on anglers. Takeshi Kaiko certainly understood that appeal. If fishing is part of your holiday, arrange the practical details before you arrive; the fish are not in charge of the paperwork.

From our base
Contact a local fishing operator about suitable waters, current permits, equipment and boats. Rules differ between lake and river areas. Do not assume rental tackle, a boat or an English-speaking guide is included with your stay.
When to go
Fishing has its own permitted seasons and local restrictions; confirm current rules with the operator.

Summer · A different view of the mountains

A paddle on Lake Okutadami

A guided stand-up paddleboard outing brings the mountains a little closer to water level. It is a good counterpoint to a walking day—and a chance to practise standing still with considerably more concentration than usual.

From our base
Seasonal guided tours use the Ginzan-daira lakeside area. Book directly with an operator and confirm meeting point, age limits, equipment and language support before reserving.
When to go
Summer to early autumn, depending on the operator, weather and water conditions.

Leave something unplanned

For a gentle day: a river-and-forest walk, lunch you have brought with you, and time for a book or a hot spring.
For a bigger day: reserve the seasonal boat-and-bus journey towards Ozenuma and work backwards from the last return connection.
An autumn visit can be all lake reflections and beech leaves. Clouds, naturally, have their own itinerary.

A good day deserves a good base.
