Explore · Matsumoto & the Japan Alps

A castle town.
An Alpine playground.

Ski one day, follow a river the next, and leave an afternoon for cafés and a castle. From our base in Asama Onsen, the mountains and the city make excellent neighbours. Your bath bucket can stay at home for the day.

Guests spending time in the Asama Onsen neighbourhood
Your base: Asama Onsen, Matsumoto

Start close to home with Matsumoto's castle, art and old streets. For days further afield, choose Hakuba, Kamikochi, Norikura or Utsukushigahara; give the Kiso Valley towns their own time. Regular buses also link Matsumoto with Takayama, making the two towns easy to combine without a car. A quieter day by Lake Suwa is another option.

History · An easy first outing

Matsumoto Castle

A black timber castle, a broad moat and, on a clear day, the Alps beyond. Take a slow lap outside before going into the keep. The original interior has steep stairs: impressive architecture, with a small workout included.

From our base
From Asama Onsen, take a local bus or taxi into central Matsumoto. Combine it with the old streets rather than making a separate trip.
When to go
Year-round; check admission days and hours.

Food, crafts & a good wander

Nakamachi & Nawate

White-walled storehouses, small shops, coffee stops and a riverside street with a soft spot for frogs. This is the day to browse without a shopping list. Add lunch, find a favourite café, and see how little urgency suits you.

From our base
In central Matsumoto, an easy walk to combine with the castle. Take a local bus or taxi from Asama Onsen.
When to go
Year-round; individual shops keep their own hours.

Art · A fine rainy-day plan

Yayoi Kusama in her home city

Matsumoto is Yayoi Kusama's birthplace, and the City Museum of Art makes her work a very good reason to come inside. Check the collection and special exhibitions before you visit. A rainy afternoon need not be a wasted one.

From our base
Head into central Matsumoto from Asama Onsen. The museum is east of Matsumoto Station; use the official access guide for buses and the walk.
When to go
Year-round exhibitions; closed days and displays vary.

Winter · A day on the slopes

Hakuba Valley

For travellers with a rental car, a Hakuba ski day and an evening in Matsumoto can make a very happy combination. Choose a resort for your level, book equipment or lessons separately, then return for dinner and a soak. Your legs have earned it.

From our base
Allow roughly 90 minutes by car each way as a general guide; the resort, snow and traffic can make it longer. Arrange a winter-equipped rental car and check roads before setting off.
When to go
Winter skiing; opening dates and lift operation depend on snow and weather.

Kamikochi

Green season · A whole day outdoors

Kamikochi

Clear river water, a suspension bridge and peaks that make you put the phone down—briefly, at least. Start with a valley walk around Kappa Bridge and choose a route that suits the weather and your legs. Mountain summits are an entirely different undertaking.

From our base
Travel via Matsumoto Station and Shin-Shimashima by rail and bus, or drive to Sawando and transfer to a bus or taxi. Private cars cannot enter Kamikochi. Keep a full day for the outing and check return services.
When to go
Normally mid-April to mid-November; check this year’s opening dates and trail conditions.

Narai-juku

History · A Nakasendo day trip

Narai-juku

A long street of wooden merchant houses on the old Nakasendo route. Come for the architecture, pause for noodles or coffee, and browse lacquerware along the way. The pleasure here is in walking slowly, not collecting another sightseeing tick.

From our base
First get to Matsumoto Station, then take a JR Chuo Line local service towards Narai, changing if needed. Check the timetable for a return trip; a rental car is another option.
When to go
Year-round; shops have individual opening days. Snow and ice can make winter walking slippery.

Food & countryside · Go green

Daio Wasabi Farm & Azumino

Meet wasabi before it reaches the sushi plate: clear streams, growing beds and the watermills of Azumino. Try something made with the real thing. Wasabi ice cream may sound like a dare; it is a perfectly respectable holiday experiment.

From our base
A rental car makes an Azumino day easy. Without one, travel from Matsumoto to Hotaka by JR Oito Line, then use the locally available taxi, bus or bicycle options described by the tourism association.
When to go
Year-round; seasonal transport and activity availability vary.

Takayama

Old town & markets · Across the Alps

Takayama

Wooden merchant streets, sake breweries and morning markets: Takayama pairs naturally with Matsumoto on a journey through central Japan. Come for a long day out, or connect the two towns as stops on your trip. There is no need to choose only one castle-town kind of holiday.

From our base
First travel from Asama Onsen to Matsumoto Bus Terminal. Reserved direct buses run several times a day via Hirayu Onsen, taking about 2½ hours each way. Check the current timetable and book ahead; for a day trip, allow time for both journeys.
When to go
Year-round bus route; mountain weather and traffic can cause delays. Check current operation before travelling.

Tsumago & the Magome–Tsumago trail

Nakasendo · A town and a walk

Tsumago & the Magome–Tsumago trail

Preserved wooden houses, a mountain path and the pleasing feeling of arriving somewhere on foot. Visit Tsumago on its own, or walk the old Nakasendo from Magome. The roughly 8 km trail takes about three hours at an unhurried pace. Leave time for tea; the old travellers surely did.

From our base
From Matsumoto, use JR services towards Nagiso, changing if required, then a local bus or taxi to Tsumago. Buses are limited: plan both ends of the walk and the return to Matsumoto in advance. Give this a full day rather than squeezing it into a Narai visit.
When to go
Best planned for the walking season with suitable weather. Check trail conditions and winter ice or snow before setting out.

Norikura Highlands & the mountain above

Waterfalls, highland walks & winter snow

Norikura Highlands & the mountain above

Choose a waterfall walk, a highland hot spring or a guided winter snowshoe outing. Norikura has more than one version of a mountain day. In summer, the seasonal bus towards Tatamidaira opens another, higher world; a summit walk needs its own time, clothing and weather judgement.

From our base
Travel via Matsumoto and Shin-Shimashima, then the Norikura Kogen bus, or drive to the highlands. Bus seasons and timetables vary. The higher road to Tatamidaira is restricted to authorised transport; use the seasonal shuttle rather than a private car.
When to go
Highland activities vary through the year. The high-altitude bus is a summer–autumn service, separate from winter activities.

Utsukushigahara Highlands

Open skies · A green-season mountain day

Utsukushigahara Highlands

Broad grassy slopes, summer flowers, grazing cattle and a panorama of mountain ranges: this is a highland day with room to breathe. Choose a walk for the visibility and weather. Even in summer, a warm layer earns its place in the bag.

From our base
A car gives flexibility from Asama Onsen. A reservation-only direct bus from Matsumoto Station runs on selected summer dates. Decide between the Nature Conservation Center side and the open-air museum side before setting your route: they are not connected by a road across the plateau.
When to go
Plan for the green season. Access roads have winter closures, and buses and the open-air museum have their own seasons. Check current road notices.

Lake Suwa

Lakeside walks, hot springs & a change of pace

Lake Suwa

Trade high peaks for a wide lakeside horizon. Walk by the water, try a hot-spring bath, or make time for Suwa's shrines and sake heritage. It is a good choice for a quieter day—or a stop on the journey between Matsumoto and Tokyo. Anyone tasting sake gets to be the passenger.

From our base
Travel to Matsumoto Station, then take a suitable JR service towards Kamisuwa for the eastern lakeshore, changing if needed. A rental car helps when combining sites around the lake; choose your stops rather than assuming they are all within one short walk.
When to go
Year-round, with seasonal scenery and individual facility schedules. Summer events need separate date and transport checks.

A few good days

An easy first day: castle → Nakamachi and Nawate → an evening soak in Asama Onsen.
With a car in winter: a Hakuba ski day, then a slower day in town.
In the green season: choose one mountain area for the day—Kamikochi, Norikura or Utsukushigahara.
Travelling across central Japan? Link Takayama and Matsumoto by reserved bus, or add a full day for Tsumago and the Nakasendo. Leave something for your next visit.

A good day deserves a good base.

Come home to Matsumoto.
